During a recent chat with The Sunday Times, Art Garfunkel shared an uplifting update about his relationship with his estranged musical partner, Paul Simon, noting that they reunited for the first time in years.

This came while he was making a new album with his son Art Jr., with whom he formed a new band, Garfunkel and Garfunkel. Art admitted that the reunion was an emotional one that made him cry as they revisited their issues over lunch at the Pierre Hotel in New York City.

It all started in the early ’50s when Simon and Art met in elementary school, where they would write songs together and bond over their mutual idols—the Everly Brothers. They became Simon & Garfunkel in the ’60s and soon became recognized as hitmakers with “The Sound of Silence” and “Mrs. Robinson.”

Before their split in 1970, the duo hit a rough patch due to creative differences, while Simon started to feel exploited by his longtime friend and partner. They separated after releasing Bridge Over Troubled Water in 1970, with a few brief reunions punctuating their solo careers.

Will Simon & Garfunkel become a music duo again?

With the recent update about their meetup, fans are left wondering if Simon & Garfunkel will come alive again. Art revealed that he felt guilty and tearful for how he may have treated Simon in the past. The latter felt like he was doing all the songwriting while Art did little to no creative work, while they shared equal recognition.

Art hinted at another meetup soon, hoping Simon might bring his guitar along; however, he is more focused on repairing their friendship than their joint career. Art Jr. noted that the former duo may likely perform together again and take it further with new music if the industry encourages it.
