What Stores Are Open For Thanksgiving And Black Friday 2023?

by Dana Daly

Find out which stores will be open or closed for Thanksgiving and Black Friday 2023

The extended Thanksgiving weekend is a time of family, fun, and holiday shopping. Stores these days are aware of the different things Thanksgiving and Black Friday mean to different people – be it deals or quality rest – and are forming their holiday hours around these priorities. So, in the digital age of 2023, which stores are open or closed for Thanksgiving and Black Friday?

The culture behind Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and even Cyber Monday, has been in a constant state of transformation over the years, with some retailers starting their deals earlier and earlier to accommodate for increased consumer interest. As a result, big-name stores famous for their in-store deals will actually be closed for these holidays in 2023.

The pandemic changed the landscape of a lot of norms in the U.S. and around the world. It was not uncommon to see massive crowds flock to Walmart for Thanksgiving deals. But since the pandemic, Walmart shut its doors for Thanksgiving and, in 2023, it will still not open for Thanksgiving.

Target followed a similar trajectory it is maintaining this year, allowing employees to stay home for Turkey Day. Kohl’s will remain closed, along with all Best Buy locations, Aldi, and the holiday icon that is Macy’s. In the past, Michael’s has stayed open for Thanksgiving but starting in 2023, the craft store will remain closed that Thursday.

So, generally, 2023 will see most stores closed for Thanksgiving Thursday, but some will break this new tradition and stay open. In most states, Dollar General will be open, although potential shoppers are advised to check out their website for local store hours, along with Whole Foods with similarly modified shopping hours. Shoprite anticipates a mixed bag, with some stores closed but some will be open with shorter hours.

Good Housekeeping reports that Shoprite, along with Stop & Shop, Wawa, Wegmans, Rite Aid, Kroger, and Acme, among most other grocery stores, will be open. The outlet also reports that Sears, Old Navy, Walgreens, CVS, and Big Lots are expected to be open.

As for Black Friday, all stores will be open, either with regular business hours or starting early – and with their deals starting even earlier. That’s because Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become a month-long deal in light of new consumer practices.
