The docuseries Harry & Meghan has started dropping on Netflix, with the first volume going up on December 8 and the second part on December 15. In the first wave of episodes, Prince Harry remembers his mother Princess Diana as a mother, who he says had a “cheeky” side to her.
Each volume is comprised of three one-hour episodes for a total of six entries, covering the relationship between Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle. The series has already received the highest U.K. ratings of any Netflix show in 2022. Here is some of what viewers got to learn.
Prince Harry remembers select memories from growing up
“I don’t really have any early memories of my mum,” admitted Harry. “It’s almost like, internally I blocked them out.” There were some moments that do stand out in stark contrast, though. Harry recalled, “The majority of my memories are being swarmed by paparazzi. Rarely would we have a holiday without someone with a camera jumping out of a bush. Within the family, the system, the advice is always ‘don’t react, don’t feed into it.'”

Princess Diana gave Prince Harry another piece of advice, which she did leading by example. Harry has observed that “so many people in the (royal) family, especially the men, there can be a temptation or an urge to marry someone who would fit the mould as opposed to somebody who perhaps you are destined to be with.” He likens it to choosing with the head or heart and noted, “My mum certainly made most of her decisions, if not all of them, from her heart. And I am my mother’s son.”
Prince Harry revealed that Princess Diana could be “cheeky” as a mother
Although early memories are limited, Prince Harry recalls different sensations and experiences from his late mother. “I always remember her laugh, her cheeky laugh,” shared Harry. “Her saying to me: ‘You can get into trouble, just don’t get caught.'” As a result, thanks to Princess Diana, Harry informs, “I’ll always be that cheeky person inside.” Vintage palace footage does show Diana could be quite relatable as a parent, fussing over her sons when they were toddlers and knowing exactly how to get unruly royals to cooperate.
Harry & Meghan features cameos from some key figures in the lives of the estranged prince and duchess, including Meghan’s mother Doris, and her niece Ashleigh. In the first episode, Harry told of a childhood “filled with laughter, filled with happiness and filled with adventure” while Diana lived. Meanwhile, Meghan recalled during her youth when a stranger shouted the n-word at her mother. Royal family member and civilian-turned-actress could also relate to watching their respective parents go through a divorce.
