Anytime Kate Middleton or Meghan Markle are spotted, it’s usually with very sharp outfits completed by a pair of heels. Feet are some of the most important extremities to keep comfortable, since any pain there just moves up the body. So how do they manage such demanding fashion items day after day?
A fashion designer has the answer – and a useful trick for anyone else who wants to wear the precarious but fabulous footwear. Style expert Miranda Holder says that the secret is a trick that doesn’t even involve any clunky tools like shoe stretchers – just the shoes themselves and some strategic padding as needed. Here’s how it’s done.
A style expert reveals how Duchess Meghan and Princess Kate are able to wear heels all day every day
Whether a royal family member has retreated from the spotlight like Meghan or is still in the thick of things like Kate Middleton, the public’s attention is always ready to turn to them – and so are the camera lenses. Both were seen quite a bit in recent weeks to mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, as they took part in a series of formal events. Both Kate and Meghan wore symbolic jewelry and clothes and stayed on their feet the whole time in tall, thin heels. They make it look easy, but is it?

“The surprising fashion hack Kate and Meghan both use to stay comfortable in their high heels all day long,” Holder shared on TikTok. “Both Kate and Meghan are fans of the leg-lengthening high heels for formal occasions, but how do they manage to stay comfortable all day? Both ladies choose to wear heels that are often half to one size too large for them.”
A purpose behind every item
Many of the fashion choices Kate and Meghan make have some deliberation behind them, some visible like their jewelry and coats and others hidden in their heels. When Holder’s followers heard that the trick is to wear heels just a bit too big, they immediately asked, “How do they keep them from turning into flip-flops?” To this, Holder explained, “They put silicone pads inside and sometimes sticky tape,” emphasizing the silicon pads can go right inside the shoe and even on the tights and the double-sided tape goes in the shoe.
Before them, Princess Diana reigned as one of the most fashionable among the royals. Her dresses are still cherished and carefully preserved, which is saying something considering textile preservation is one of the most difficult forms of historic conservation out there. Diana was sometimes met with criticism from within, though, such as when she wore a one-shoulder dress by Japanese designer Hachi. Former British Vogue deputy editor Anna Harvey said, “She looked sensational but the establishment hated it. It was too revealing; they didn’t think it was royal.” Even so, both Meghan and Kate have incorporated nods to the late princess’s wardrobe throughout the years.
