An episode of The Golden Girls has been removed from Hulu. Recently, many sitcoms are being edited or full episodes are being pulled from streaming services due to racially insensitive content. The Golden Girls episode that was pulled is called “Mixed Blessings.” This was because several characters are seen in blackface.
The episode originally aired in 1988. In the episode, Michael (Scott Jacoby) is set to marry Lorraine (Rosalind Cash). Both of their families oppose the wedding. Michael is White and Lorraine is an older Black woman.
A ‘Golden Girls’ episode is no longer available on Hulu because characters are seen in blackface
Rose (Betty White) and Blanche (Rue McClanahan) are applying mud facials when Lorraine’s family arrives. They say, “This is mud on our faces, we’re not really black.”

As of now, other sitcoms including 30 Rock, Scrubs, The Office, and Community have had episodes edited or removed from Hulu and Netflix. Other shows and movies are adding disclaimers due to racially insensitive content that was made decades ago.
Likely, if episodes are being pulled from streaming services, cable networks will not show reruns of these episodes either. Films such as Gone With the Wind were pulled initially but returned with a disclaimer about the racially insensitive material.
Do you think episodes such as these should be removed completely or given a disclaimer?
