More than five decades after Maude premiered, the beloved sitcom remains one of television's most memorable comedies. Starring Bea Arthur as the outspoken Maude Findlay, the CBS series entertained audiences with sharp humor, unforgettable characters, and bold conversations about social issues. According to SlashFilm, although several familiar faces from the show have since passed away, some performers are still alive and have pursued remarkable careers beyond the sitcom. From successful Hollywood actresses to former child stars who found new professions, the surviving Maude cast members have followed different paths since the series ended in 1978. Which Original Stars From The Cast Of 'Maude' Are Still Alive? MAUDE, Bill Macy, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, Adrienne Barbeau, 1972-1978/Everett Collection Adrienne Barbeau, 81, remains one of the show's most recognizable surviving actresses. She portrayed Carol Traynor, Maude's independent daughter and a single mother. After the sitcom ended, Barbeau established herself in Hollywood through films including The Fog, Escape from New York, and Creepshow. Additionally, she developed a successful voice-acting career, portraying Catwoman in Batman: The Animated Series. Her television credits also include Carnivàle and General Hospital. Barbeau recently shared some surprising memories of her television mother. Speaking with People in October 2026, the actress revealed that Arthur was very different from the outspoken, frequently combative characters she portrayed on television. Away from the cameras, Arthur was a private person who loved spending time at home with her children and dogs. She also enjoyed cooking, a far cry from Maude Findlay's constant battles with everyone around her. Barbeau remembered the cast as a close-knit family and credited Arthur with helping create a welcoming atmosphere during their six years together. Morrison appeared in the first five seasons before moving into special effects, working on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and several Harry Potter films. Metzinger took over in the final season before his last known screen appearance in Little House on the Prairie. Marlene Warfield, who played housekeeper Victoria Butterfield, later appeared in The Jeffersons, Hill Street Blues, and The West Wing. Barbeau's career is still going strong at 81. She recently appeared in the horror film Oddities, directed by Tyler Savage, playing the owner of a mysterious antique shop. In an October 2026 interview with People, she reflected on her unexpected reputation as a sex symbol during her Maude years. Although audiences admired her looks, she wanted to be recognized for her abilities as an actress. Barbeau continued challenging those expectations throughout her career, moving from comedy to horror films and voice acting while developing a loyal following across several generations. The two actors who portrayed Phillip also had remarkably different experiences after leaving the Findlay household. Morrison abandoned acting but eventually found work behind the scenes, contributing to the special effects of films including Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and several Harry Potter installments. Metzinger, meanwhile, appeared in an episode of Little House on the Prairie in 1978 before disappearing from the entertainment industry's credited roles. Little has been publicly documented about his subsequent life, making him one of the more mysterious former child stars from the series. He later became famous for portraying Gopher on The Love Boat before entering politics and serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. However, several of the sitcom's biggest stars are no longer alive. Arthur died in 2009, while Rue McClanahan, who portrayed Vivian Harmon, passed away in 2010. Bill Macy, who played Walter Findlay, died in 2019, and Conrad Bain, remembered as Dr. Arthur Harmon, died in 2013. Esther Rolle Left 'Maude' And Became The Star Of 'Good Times' MAUDE, from left: Bea Arthur, Bill Macy, (1973), 1972-78. photo: Sherman Weisburd/TV Guide/courtesy Everett Collection One of the most important actresses to emerge from Maude was Esther Rolle, who played the Findlay family's original housekeeper, Florida Evans. Rolle joined the series in 1972 but was initially reluctant to portray a domestic worker, fearing the character would reinforce Hollywood stereotypes. Norman Lear assured her that Florida would be an intelligent, outspoken woman with a personality of her own. The role became popular enough that CBS developed a new sitcom around her. In 1974, Rolle left Maude to star in Good Times, which followed Florida and her family in Chicago. Rolle was equally protective of her new character. She insisted that Florida have a husband, played by John Amos, because she wanted television audiences to see a loving Black family with both parents present. Good Times became another major success, introducing viewers to Jimmie Walker's unforgettable J.J. Evans. Rolle died in 1998 at 78, but her character remains an important part of Norman Lear's television legacy. Her success also made Maude part of an unusual sitcom family tree: All in the Family inspired Maude, which in turn led to Good Times. Created by Norman Lear as an All in the Family spinoff, Maude premiered in 1972 and became known for tackling controversial topics, including women's rights, marriage, and social expectations. Though it ended after six seasons, its influence remains strong. Revisiting the surviving cast offers fans a nostalgic reminder of the talented performers who made the sitcom a classic. 'Maude' Made Television History With A Controversial Storyline Photo Credit: Everett Collection One of the show's most groundbreaking moments came during its first season, when Maude discovered she was pregnant at 47 and decided to have an abortion. The two-part episode, "Maude's Dilemma," aired in November 1972, months before the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade decision. Writer Susan Harris originally intended the storyline for Maude's friend Vivian, but Lear believed the subject was too important to give to a supporting character. The episode sparked an enormous public debate, particularly when CBS announced plans to rebroadcast it in 1973. The controversy was so intense that dozens of CBS affiliates refused to carry the reruns, while sponsors withdrew their advertisements. Nevertheless, the episode reached a massive audience and became one of the most discussed moments in television history. Barbeau later recalled how the series addressed difficult subjects without abandoning its humor. Its willingness to explore controversial issues helped distinguish Maude from more traditional family sitcoms, while giving Arthur one of the most memorable roles of her career.
