For more than 50 years, fans have argued over the jester in "American Pie," and the name that comes up first, almost every time, is Bob Dylan. Don McLean, the man who wrote the song, has never named the jester outright. But in the 2022 documentary The Day the Music Died: The Story of Don McLean's "American Pie", he did say plainly who it was not. The film premiered on Paramount+ on July 19, 2022, and it marked the first time McLean walked through the lyrics on camera. One by one, he took apart some of the song's best-known theories, from the king to the girl who sang the blues. What follows is what he has said about each line, and which explanations still belong to the fans. Why Did McLean Keep Quiet For So Long? Don McLean, 1971 / Everett If you owned the record, you remember how long it was. McLean wrote and recorded "American Pie" and released it in October 1971 on his album American Pie for United Artists; the album version runs a full 8 minutes and 42 seconds. None of that held it back, and starting January 15, 1972, the song spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its standing has only grown since. The song ranked No. 5 on the RIAA's Songs of the Century list, and in 2017 it was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. McLean himself was born October 2, 1945, in New Rochelle, New York, and he is 81 today. For decades, McLean treated questions about the lyrics as missing the point. Early on, he told interviewers the words were "beyond analysis. They're poetry," according to the song's Wikipedia history, and he stuck to that for a long time. As the Chicago Sun-Times noted in its review of the documentary, he had "largely declined to get into the specifics" for most of his career. The door opened a crack on April 7, 2015, when Christie's in New York auctioned his original manuscript and working notes for $1.2 million. CBS New York reported that the 16 pages held 237 handwritten lines and 26 lines of typed text, including some lines that never made the final song. The buyer was never named. McLean described writing the song as "part of my process of self-awakening; a mystical trip into my past." In the Christie's catalog, he called it a morality song, explaining, "Basically in 'American Pie' things are heading in the wrong direction." Releasing the notes as he reached 70 felt right, he told American Songwriter, adding that "this song was not a parlor game." Even so, the notes left the biggest riddles open. Before getting to the jester, it helps to start where McLean himself started. What Really Happened On The Day The Music Died? Everett This is the one line McLean has always been willing to explain. On February 3, 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson died in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. McLean was a 13-year-old paperboy in New Rochelle at the time, and he has said he learned of the crash from the very bundle of papers he was about to deliver. That moment is where the song's lines about February and the paper route come from. "I was in absolute shock. I may have actually cried," he says in the documentary, as quoted by ABC News. "I always feel a tug inside me whenever I think about Buddy." Years later, in a 2009 essay for CNN, he called the finished piece "a big song... that summed up the world known as America." From that February day, the song moves on through the 1960s, and that is where the riddles begin. Is The King Elvis, And Who Was The Girl Who Sang The Blues? Elvis Presley/Everett Most listeners assumed the king was Elvis Presley, and McLean says they were wrong. "The King in my song has a thorny crown. And only Jesus had a thorny crown," he told the Arizona Republic in 2022. "I think I was very clear about that." Then he added a gentle reminder for everyone hunting for codes: "It's an impressionistic piece." The girl who sang the blues has long been read as Janis Joplin. According to InsideHook and the song's Wikipedia history, McLean says in the documentary that she is not Joplin, though he has not offered another name in her place. He was more forthcoming about two smaller images. ABC News reported that the marching band stands for the military industrial complex and that the "sweet perfume" is tear gas. "Even God has been corrupted," he says in the film. There is one more reading that often gets attributed to him. Reports on the 2015 sale said the notes tied the song's dark climax to the Rolling Stones concert at Altamont in December 1969, where Meredith Hunter was killed, but that interpretation comes from press accounts of the catalogue rather than from anything McLean said himself. That brings us to the three men in the final verse, the image that closes the song. Who Are The Three Men He Admired Most? AMERICAN BANDSTAND'S 40TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL, Don McLean, 1992. ph: Craig Sjodin /© ABC / Courtesy Everett Collection In the last verse, the narrator says the three men he admires most caught the last train for the coast, and he describes them as the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. The widely held reading is that they stand for Holly, Valens and Richardson, the three men lost in 1959, set alongside the Holy Trinity. That religious language runs all through the song. The king wears a thorny crown, and the final verse visits a "sacred store" where the music would not play. Still, McLean has not spelled out the three men in any interview we could find, so the Holly reading remains a fan interpretation, even if it is the most popular one by a wide margin. Which brings the story back to the jester, and to the man most people have pictured in that role for half a century. So Who Is The Jester In "American Pie"? ROLLING THUNDER REVUE: A BOB DYLAN STORY BY MARTIN SCORSESE, Bob Dylan, Scarlet Rivera (playing violin, behind him), 2019. © Netflix / Courtesy Everett Collection The case for Dylan is a fan theory built on a few tantalizing details. The song says the jester sang for the king and queen in a coat borrowed from James Dean, and fans connect that to the jacket Dylan wears on the cover of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan from 1963. A later line about the jester on the sidelines in a cast is often linked to Dylan's 1966 motorcycle crash. For years, McLean seemed to enjoy keeping the question alive. Asked by The Guardian in 2020 whether Dylan was the jester, he answered, "I can't tell you. But he would make a damn good jester, wouldn't he?" American Songwriter reported that he even refused to answer when Dylan's son Jakob asked him. Dylan, for his part, was not amused. In a 2017 interview with writer Bill Flanagan, reported by Ultimate Classic Rock, he pointed to protest songs such as "Masters of War" as proof he was no jester. "I have to think he's talking about somebody else," Dylan said. "Ask him." In the documentary, McLean finally drew the line. "I said James Dean in the song. If I meant Elvis or Bob Dylan, I would have said their names," he says. James Dean is the only real person the song names, a point he made again to the Arizona Republic: "I don't reference anybody in there other than James Dean by name." By his own account, then, the jester was never meant to be Dylan, and McLean has never put another name on him. He did offer one thought of his own about that era, and it says a lot about how he sees the decade the song chronicles: "The same group of people that elected Kennedy produced Dylan. It's just my theory." Fifty-five years on, McLean is still singing the song every night, and still letting the audience decide who the jester is. Two weeks after his 81st birthday on October 2, his American Pie 55th Anniversary Tour played the WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong, Australia, on October 18, 2026.
