He was born into a working-class family in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood in New York City. His mother was a women’s professional wrestling promoter, and his father was a hairdresser. An unfortunate complication during Stallone’s birth caused partial facial paralysis, giving him his signature snarled lip and slurred speech. Despite facing early setbacks and a challenging childhood, the young Sylvester Stallone remains determined to follow his dream of becoming an actor. In the early 1970s, he held a few small roles in various films before achieving worldwide fame in 1976 through his smash hit Rocky, a film about a struggling boxer. Stallone wrote the script for this film himself after watching a boxing match between Muhammed Ali and Chuck Wepner. After the success of Rocky, Stallone’s career skyrocketed. Between 1978 and 1999, he starred in numerous films, including First Blood, where he portrayed Vietnam veteran John Rambo, yet another iconic character brought to life by Stallone. At his height in the 1980s, Stallone was one of the most famous action stars globally, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, with whom he famously had an intense rivalry.
