Nashville is moving closer to giving one of its biggest landmarks a name closely tied to Tennessee itself. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s board of commissioners voted unanimously to begin changing Nashville International Airport’s name in honor of Dolly Parton.

According to The Guardian, the latest Dolly Parton airport development also clears a hurdle surrounding the tribute. Nashville leaders had already supported honoring the country legend, but an existing airport naming rule complicated those plans. The board has now moved the process forward, although completing the change will take time.

Commissioners voted 6-0 to begin the renaming process, though officials have not yet chosen a final name. The airport authority says it will work with the appropriate parties to decide how Parton’s name and legacy should become part of the airport’s identity.

Changing the name will involve far more than replacing a terminal sign. Officials will eventually need to update signage across the airport property, along with merchandise, shuttle buses, uniforms, contracts, and other materials. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell both backed the proposal, helping turn what once sounded like a playful idea into a serious tribute.

Her Tennessee Legacy Reached Far Beyond Music

Parton herself once seemed amused by the possibility. When the idea surfaced during her lifetime, she doubted it would actually happen and joked about passengers hearing that their flight was departing from Nashville’s “D Parton.” Her response carried the humor fans knew well, even as the proposal reflected her enormous place in Tennessee culture.

Her impact stretched well beyond songs such as “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “I Will Always Love You.” Dollywood has become a major Tennessee attraction and is estimated to generate roughly $1.8 billion for the state each year. Her Imagination Library also turned her success into a worldwide literacy effort for children. An airport honoring Dolly Parton would therefore celebrate not only a country music icon but also a woman whose career, generosity, and personality became deeply connected to Tennessee.
