Bindi Irwin Honors Dad Steve 20 Years After His Death And Says Her Daughter Loves Him Too

by Ruth A

Published September 9, 2026

Twenty years after the death of Steve Irwin, his children are making sure the world still remembers the larger-than-life conservationist not only for his work with wildlife but also for the love he gave his family. Robert and Bindi Irwin marked the anniversary with emotional tributes that looked back on their childhood and the legacy their father left behind.

According to People, the anniversary of Steve Irwin’s death brought fresh reflection on how much has changed since Sept. 4, 2006. Steve was only 44 when a stingray pierced his chest while he filmed Ocean’s Deadliest off the coast of Australia. Two decades later, his family continues the conservation work that made him famous while keeping his memory alive for a new generation.

Robert Irwin honored his father by sharing a childhood photo of himself sitting on Steve’s lap. His simple message, “Your legacy is forever,” captured how strongly his father’s influence still shapes his life. Bindi shared an even more personal tribute featuring a video of Steve talking about the day she was born and describing himself as the proudest father in the world.

In her message, Bindi reflected on the grief her family has carried for 20 years. She remembered losing her superhero, while her mother, Terri, lost the love of her life. Yet Bindi also explained that time has changed the way she understands her father’s legacy. She once thought wildlife conservation defined it, but now she believes his greatest legacy was love—for animals, the planet, and the people around him.

Steve became an international star through The Crocodile Hunter, which premiered in 1996 and followed his adventures with Terri at Australia Zoo. The couple later welcomed Bindi and Robert, who grew up surrounded by their family’s conservation work. Today, they continue that mission with Terri and Chandler Powell. Bindi’s 5-year-old daughter also watches Steve’s documentaries and affectionately calls him “grandpa crocodile.”

That continuing bond helps explain why the story of the Steve Irwin death still resonates so deeply with fans. His television energy made him famous, but his enthusiasm for wildlife inspired viewers to care more about conservation. Robert has previously said his father cared less about whether people remembered his name and more about whether they remembered his message. Two decades later, both have endured. Steve’s children have built their own lives, appeared on television, and continued the work at Australia Zoo, yet they still carry the lessons he gave them as a father. For the Irwin family, his legacy has become something bigger than conservation alone—a lasting reminder to live boldly, care deeply, and pass that love forward.
