‘Clue’ Had A Fourth Ending Starring Tim Curry — And Fans Want It Unearthed

by Ruth A

Published September 5, 2026

Four decades after Clue first hit theaters, fans may still have one more mystery waiting to be solved. The filmmakers behind the 2022 documentary “Who Done It: The Clue Documentary” are urging Paramount to search its archives for a long-lost alternate ending featuring Tim Curry’s unforgettable Wadsworth.

According to People, the Clue‘s fourth ending has fascinated fans for years because, unlike the three versions audiences already know, it reportedly revealed Wadsworth as the person responsible for all the murders. Following Curry’s death at age 80, the documentary team believes finally releasing the footage would make a fitting tribute to one of his most beloved performances.

The 1985 comedy famously included three different endings, each offering another explanation for the murders at the mysterious mansion. Curry, Leslie Ann Warren, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Colleen Camp, Eileen Brennan, Michael McKean, and Martin Mull made up the eccentric ensemble at the center of the whodunit.

A fourth version reportedly took things even further. In that ending, Wadsworth revealed that he committed all the murders before attempting to escape from police. Director Jonathan Lynn and Curry both acknowledged the sequence over the years, while production stills and versions of the story in tie-in books suggest that filmmakers shot at least part of it. Jeff Smith, director of “Who Done It,” recently shared an open letter asking Paramount to search for the missing footage. He argued that the studio could have the material buried somewhere in its archives, possibly under an incorrect label or untouched for decades. Fans had previously hoped the scene might surface with the movie’s 4K release, but it remained absent.

The campaign carries even greater meaning because Curry himself expressed affection for the unseen version. Earlier this year, during a visit to the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library, the actor discussed the multiple endings and remembered the version in which Wadsworth committed every murder. Curry called that ending his favorite and explained that filmmakers ultimately did not release it because they considered the solution too obvious. His enthusiasm has only increased fans’ curiosity about what his performance looked like in the missing sequence.

Clue originally reached theaters with different endings, later combined for home release. Curry’s frantic performance became one of the film’s most beloved elements. If Paramount finds the missing Clue fourth ending, fans could see a new variation of one of his signature roles decades later. The search offers one more reminder of how strongly Curry’s work still resonates.
