For years, John Schneider insisted he did not owe his ex-wife what she said he owed. Now the man who spent six seasons as Bo Duke on The Dukes of Hazzard has changed his answer. According to court documents obtained by TMZ and reported by Closer Weekly and Taste of Country on November 3, Schneider, 66, now acknowledges that he owes his ex-wife, Elvira “Elly” Castle, nearly $3.7 million in back spousal support, interest included.
He is not paying it, though, at least not yet. In the same filing, Schneider says he is not “financially capable of satisfying the accumulated arrearages,” and he is asking the court for one specific protection. He does not want half of his Social Security benefits diverted to her, because, his filing argues, that “would substantially affect the resources available” to him. The court has not ruled.
How Did A Marriage Of More Than 20 Years End Up Here?
Schneider married Elvira, who also goes by Elly Castle, in 1993. By then he was a long way from the 18-year-old who had talked his way into the role of Bo Duke in 1979. He had scored four No. 1 country singles, including “I’ve Been Around Enough to Know” and “Country Girls,” and he had moved on to TV roles that kept him working for decades, from Smallville to The Haves and the Have Nots.
The marriage came apart in 2014, when Elvira filed for divorce. The case dragged on for five years. When the divorce was finalized in 2019, Closer reports, Elvira received sole ownership of a $600,000 California property and a $60,000 IRA, and Schneider was ordered to pay about $279,000 in legal fees plus $25,000 a month in spousal support.
That monthly figure became the heart of the fight. In 2018, before the divorce was even final, Schneider was sentenced to three days in jail for failing to pay court-ordered support, and he was also ordered to do community service. Because of overcrowding, Taste of Country notes, he served only a few hours. The missed payments kept piling up, and so did the interest.
By March 2026, Elvira was claiming he owed her $2,383,548, a figure TMZ said included $984,000 in interest. The new number is far higher, and this time Schneider is the one who put it on paper.
What Has John Schneider Said About The Money?

In the filing, Schneider explains that he did not believe the support order was valid. He says the confusion came from orders issued in two states, California and Louisiana, where he built his film studio in the town of Holden. He now accepts that he owes the full amount, but says he simply does not have it.
He has been blunt about the case in public. Talking to Fox News Digital in July, he framed the fight as a matter of principle. “It’s common sense versus entitlement,” he said. “I’ve worked seven days a week, 80 hours a week, at least since 1978.” He also sounded worn out by how long it has lasted. “She filed for divorce in 2014. My God, that’s been 12 years,” he said, before adding a hopeful note: “It’s a negotiation. Everything’s a negotiation. We’re working it out.”
Elvira has not commented publicly on the new filing. Her side of the story so far has come through her own court claims, which is why the jump from $2.4 million to $3.7 million matters. It is Schneider’s own paperwork that now puts the debt at the higher figure, and that is what makes this turn so unusual.
Where Does This Leave Schneider Today?

The money fight has run alongside the hardest stretch of Schneider’s personal life. In 2019, the same year the divorce was finalized, he married producer Alicia Allain. She died in February 2023 at just 53 after a battle with breast cancer, and Schneider spoke openly about his grief in the months that followed. In 2024 he married again, this time to Dee Dee Sorvino, the widow of actor Paul Sorvino, and DYR covered their wedding when it happened. Both have talked about the guilt they felt moving on after losing a spouse.
He has not slowed down on the work front either. Schneider still acts, writes and directs out of his Louisiana studio, which came through a damaging flood in 2016, and he finished second on The Masked Singer in 2023. He is also one of the familiar faces in our look at the Dukes of Hazzard cast members still with us.
What happens next is up to a judge. If the court sides with Elvira, half of Schneider’s Social Security could go toward a debt he now admits is real. If it sides with him, the money stays with him and the $3.7 million stays on the books. Either way, the man who once outran Boss Hogg every Friday night has finally stopped running from the number. “Cooler heads will prevail,” he told Fox in July, “and we’ll get through it.”
