Sandra Bullock And Nicole Kidman Reveal The Personal Reason ‘Practical Magic 2’ Finally Happened

by Ruth A

Published September 5, 2026

Nearly three decades after Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman played witchy sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, the actresses are returning to the world of Practical Magic with Practical Magic 2. The original 1998 film became a beloved favorite thanks to its mix of romance, family, magic, and the unforgettable bond between the Owens sisters.

According to Yahoo Entertainment, now, Practical Magic 2 brings Bullock and Kidman back together at a very different stage of life. Since the first film, both women have experienced major career changes, family milestones, and personal loss, giving their return to the story a deeper emotional weight than simple nostalgia.

‘Practical Magic 2’ Explores Family, Generations, and Old Patterns

Bullock explained that the sequel felt worth making because it gave them a chance to explore ancestry and the way families carry stories from one generation to the next. She noted that mothers and grandmothers often get reduced to those roles, even though they once had dreams, desires, and struggles of their own.

Kidman said the sequel also explores family patterns and what it takes to break them. Both actresses connected with becoming the ones who now carry their families forward. That perspective gives the film a more mature foundation, shaped by major personal losses in both Bullock’s and Kidman’s lives.

The actresses have remained close, and their reunion reflects a genuine friendship. Bullock and Kidman have both grown into major producers while continuing their acting careers. Returning to the Owens sisters now lets them revisit characters they first played as younger women, bringing decades of personal and professional experience with them.

That history gives Practical Magic 2 something the original could never have had: the perspective of time. Sally and Gillian were once women trying to understand love, loss, and family while breaking a curse. Now, the actresses behind them are returning with a much broader understanding of those same themes. For longtime fans, the reunion promises more than midnight margaritas and magical nostalgia. It offers a chance to see how the Owens family story has evolved with the women who helped make it memorable in the first place.
