by Ruth A

Published July 1, 2026

Over the course of her legendary television career, Betty White brought several unforgettable characters to life. From the witty and flirtatious Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show to the lovable and often bewildered Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls, she created roles that remain beloved by audiences decades later.

According to Me TV, while many actors hesitate to choose a favorite role, White had no trouble revealing which character meant the most to her. In interviews over the years, she openly discussed the differences between her iconic performances and explained why one stood above the rest.

White often spoke fondly of playing Sue Ann Nivens, the cheerful television host whose sweet smile often concealed a sharp wit. The character became one of the standout additions to The Mary Tyler Moore Show and earned White widespread praise for her comedic timing.

According to the actress, Sue Ann was one of the most enjoyable characters she had ever portrayed at the time. She described the role as tremendous fun, noting that the character’s over-the-top confidence and larger-than-life personality made every appearance entertaining. However, because Sue Ann usually appeared briefly in episodes, White felt there was only so much room to explore the character’s deeper layers.

Rose Nylund Ultimately Became Her Favorite

Everything changed when White joined The Golden Girls as Rose Nylund. Unlike Sue Ann, Rose appeared in every episode and allowed the actress to develop a more complete and complex character over time. White explained that Rose’s innocence and literal interpretation of the world created endless comedic opportunities. At the same time, the role occasionally revealed unexpected strength, giving viewers a chance to see different sides of the character. She also admitted that she saw more of herself in Rose than she initially realized.

The actress noted that Rose shared a strong sense of morality and a tendency to tell long stories, qualities she recognized in her own personality. Because of that connection and the depth the role provided, Betty White ultimately named Rose Nylund as her favorite character to play. For fans of both classic sitcoms, the choice highlighted just how special The Golden Girls became in her remarkable career.
