John Amos died of congestive heart failure at 84, making him the last of The Mary Tyler Moore Show castmates to pass away. Amos famously starred in the sitcom and other hits including Roots, Coming To America, and Good Times. Fans have wondered who from The Mary Tyler Moore Show is still alive, and John’s passing closes a very solemn page in a beloved story.
His co-star’s son Matt Asner took to X, formerly Twitter, to announce that the last of The Mary Tyler Moore Show cast has died. He acknowledged the late actor’s family and asked that he give his dad Ed Asner a big hug on the other side. “What an actor. Just watch him in his scenes with Ted Knight,” Matt exclaimed.

Matt accompanied his announcement post with a photo of the MTM co-stars, all of whom are now deceased. Fans soon found the post and offered their tribute in the comment section, which became abundant in nostalgic memories in no time. “Wow. That feels significantly sad. I absolutely loved your Dad BTW. The best,” a user told Matt.
Another claimed that a couple of actors were still alive, including Joyce Bulifant and Lisa Gerritsen, both having less screen time. “But what a hearty crew they were. So many living into their 90s. And what an amazing assemblage of talent in the service of a timeless classic,” another fan gushed.
From Ted Knight to John Amos, who from ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ is still alive?
Ted Knight was the first of the MTM castmates to pass away at 62, after battling with complications from surgery to treat his colorectal cancer in 1986. Next came the title actress herself, Mary Tyler Moore, who died in 2017, and then Georgia Engel and Valerie Harper in 2019.
2021 recorded the loss of four co-stars: Cloris Leachman, Betty White, Gavin MacLeod and Asner, with no others recorded until now. After the classic, Amos appeared in more movies and series and diversified into commercials, theater—as a writer and producer—and music.
