According to PEOPLE, Lawrence recently posted a photo from a dinner outing with Burnett on Instagram. Alongside the picture, she wrote that the evening was filled with “lots of laughs and lots of memories” while expressing how much she loves her longtime friend. The connection between the two stars dates all the way back to 1967, when The Carol Burnett Show first premiered. Burnett became one of television’s biggest comedy stars, while Lawrence quickly stood out as one of the show’s breakout performers.

Though there was a 16-year age difference between them, audiences especially loved seeing Lawrence portray “Mama,” the sharp-tongued mother of Burnett’s character Eunice, during the famous “The Family” sketches. Those skits eventually became so successful that they inspired the television movie Eunice and later the hit sitcom Mama’s Family, which ran for six seasons and turned Lawrence’s Mama character into a television icon of her own.

The friendship between the comedy legends has clearly remained strong through the years. Earlier this year, the pair reunited onscreen again during season 2 of Palm Royale, where Burnett plays Norma Dellacorte while Lawrence joined the series as Norma’s mother. Burnett later admitted that working with Lawrence again felt completely natural, saying it was as though no time had passed at all. She explained that the reunion instantly brought back memories of their decades performing together.

Their comedic history also created a funny full-circle moment. Lawrence famously played Burnett’s mother in “The Family” sketches while still in her twenties. When Palm Royale producers told Lawrence she would once again portray Burnett’s mother, she reportedly joked, “So what else is new?” For longtime television fans, the latest reunion between Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence felt like revisiting a cherished piece of entertainment history. Even after all these years, their friendship and chemistry still shine just as brightly as they did during the golden age of television comedy.
