When the weather warms up, air conditioning is a must for many people. However, it can be a shock when you receive your energy bill if you’ve been blasting the air conditioning for weeks or even months.
Here are some tricks to using your air conditioning and staying cool but also saving some money in the process:
1. Use fans too
Even if you are using your air conditioning, fans can team up and help keep your house cool. Raise your air conditioner temperature by about five degrees, which will significantly lower your energy costs. Use ceiling fans or box fans strategically to blow the cool air through your home.
2. Use a programmable thermostat
Install a programmable thermostat and set it to different temperatures throughout the day. Set it for warmer temperatures when no one is home. Some thermostats now come with the ability to change temperatures using your phone too.
3. Don’t block your vents
Make sure your air conditioning vents are not blocked by rugs, furniture or anything else. You don’t want to pay for air that isn’t really cooling down your home, do you? While you’re at it, make sure to seal and caulk any drafty vents, windows or doors to keep the cool air inside where it belongs. This will also help keep heat inside during winter months.
4. Clean the filter
Every month or so, pop out the filter and wipe it down. If there is too much excess gunk in the filter, it could make your air conditioning unit work too hard.
Do you use your air conditioning or do you simply rely on fans to cool your home? What temperature do you usually set it at?
