Watch First-Ever Chuck Berry Music Video For Single 'Big Boys'

Two months after Chuck Berry’s death, the rock and roller’s first-ever music video – for “Big Boys,” the single off his final album– is here

The video, shot in black and white commemorates the nostalgic feeling of being a teenager at a 1950s sock hop. Dozens of teenagers scurry over to the dance floor in their socks to dance along with the Berry song while a look-alike of the late rock and roll legend performs onstage.

The video also does a great job of mixing popular dance moves of that era (the twist, hand dancing, the duck walk, etcetera) with modern hip-hop choreography.

According to directors Matt Bizer and Curtis Wayne Millard in an NPR interview, Chuck Berry was still still alive as the video was being produced, but he passed away unfortunately on March 17th while the video was being edited. “Chuck Berry tunes are a good time and they tell stories that everyone can relate with, so we wanted to stay true to that,” Bizer and Millard sadly noted. “When we where shooting the video, Chuck Berry was still with us and during post-production we found out he had passed on. We did not know how to really process it all. In a way, I think we are still processing the entire experience.”

Chuck, Berry’s last (but certainly not least) LP and his first studio album of original content in about 40 years, comes out on June 9th.

Chuck Berry: Big Boys Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
When I was just a little boy like you
I wanted to do things the big boys do
Wherever they went you knew they wouldn’t let me go
And I got suspicious and I wanted to know
I was bright in school but my future looked dim
‘Cause the big boys wouldn’t let me party with them

[Chorus]
Yes, yes
I didn’t cry
Yes, yes
And you know why
Yes, yes
I knew when and what
Yes, yes
No ifs, ands, or buts
I was looking for joy
Yes, yes, yes, yes
When I was little bitty boy

[Verse 2]
All of the big girls with their to
When I ask ’em what’s happening, nobody knew
But when I found out where, what, when, and why
I didn’t let a single week pass by
Till the school dance when I first met you
And I learned to party like the big boys do

[Chorus]
Yes, yes
I didn’t cry
Yes, yes
And you know why
Yes, yes
I knew when and what
Yes, yes
No ifs, ands, or buts
I was looking for joy
Yes, yes, yes, yes
When I was little bitty boy

[Verse 3]
If I would have known what makes a world go ’round
I would have known what goes up must come down
If you love me like I love you
Mademoiselle, je vous aime, voulez-vous?
The girls want to stay and the boys want to play
So let’s a-rock and roll till the break of day

[Chorus]
Yes, yes
I didn’t cry
Yes, yes
And you know why
Yes, yes
I knew when and what
Yes, yes
No ifs, ands, or buts
I was looking for joy
Yes, yes, yes, yes
When I was little bitty boy
