The bluesy theme came on, the camera rolled down a hot Mississippi road, and Chief Bill Gillespie picked up the phone with a gruff “Yeah, what?” For seven seasons, In the Heat of the Night took viewers to the fictional town of Sparta. The series premiered on NBC on March 6, 1988, as a midseason replacement. It moved to CBS in 1992 and wrapped with four TV movies, the last of which aired on May 16, 1995.

Loosely based on the 1967 Sidney Poitier film and John Ball’s novel, the show tackled race and justice in the modern South. Quincy Jones composed the music, with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. The first season was shot in Hammond, Louisiana, before production settled in Covington, Georgia, for the rest of the run. More than 30 years after the last episode, here is what became of the In the Heat of the Night cast, starting with the stars we have lost.

Is Carroll O’Connor Still Alive?

Carroll O’Connor played Chief William “Bill” Gillespie, a seasoned lawman who learned to trust a Black detective from up north. Audiences already knew him as Archie Bunker on All in the Family. On In the Heat of the Night he also served as a writer and executive producer. In 1989 he won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the role, his fifth Emmy overall.

Off screen, his later years were marked by grief. His adopted son Hugh, who also starred on the show, died in 1995. O’Connor spent the rest of his life campaigning against drug dealers. He blamed the man who had supplied Hugh, calling him “a partner in murder.” The man sued him for defamation, and in 1997 a California jury ruled in O’Connor’s favor.

Carroll O’Connor died on June 21, 2001, at age 76. He collapsed at his Los Angeles home and died at Brotman Medical Center, according to the Seattle Times. His publicist said the heart attack was brought on by complications from diabetes. His wife of 50 years, Nancy, was at his side. The O’Connor family’s loss had begun six years earlier, with the son he had cast as Lonnie Jamison.

Is Hugh O’Connor Still Alive?

Hugh O’Connor played Lonnie Jamison, a patrolman who rose to lieutenant and acting chief of detectives over the course of the series. He was born in Rome on April 7, 1962. Carroll and Nancy O’Connor adopted him when he was six days old, while Carroll was in Italy filming Cleopatra.

At 16, Hugh was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He survived it through chemotherapy and two surgeries. His later drug addiction began with prescription painkillers, according to Wikipedia. In 1992 he married Angela Clayton, a wardrobe assistant he met on the show. The couple had a son, Sean.

On March 28, 1995, Hugh called his father and said he planned to end his life because he could not beat his addiction. Carroll called the police, who arrived as Hugh took his own life at his Pacific Palisades home. He was 32. Carroll later spoke openly about his son’s death to warn other families. The next loss for the show came the following year, and it was the man whose name sat beside O’Connor’s in the opening credits.

Is Howard Rollins Still Alive?

Howard Rollins played Virgil Tibbs, the Philadelphia detective who returns to Mississippi and becomes chief of detectives in Sparta. Sidney Poitier had originated the part on film, which made it a daunting assignment. Rollins came in with serious credentials. His 1981 film debut as Coalhouse Walker Jr. in Ragtime earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His role as Captain Richard Davenport in A Soldier’s Story in 1984 led directly to the Tibbs casting.

During the show’s run, Rollins struggled with drugs and alcohol and was arrested several times. He was let go as a series regular after season six. After completing rehab, he returned as a guest star in season seven. His last appearance was the episode “Conspiracy of One,” which aired on February 2, 1994. Our earlier look at the rise, fall and return of Howard Rollins traces that comeback in detail.

Howard Rollins died on December 8, 1996, at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. He was 46. The hospital did not release a cause, but a publicist for Carroll O’Connor said he died from lymphoma, the Spokesman Review reported. Wikipedia notes he had been diagnosed with AIDS that fall, about six weeks before his death. Back in season two, the chief had a love interest who brought an Emmy pedigree to Sparta.

Lois Nettleton played Joanne St. John, a diner owner and Gillespie’s girlfriend, in 22 episodes. She appeared in season two before the character was written out to make room for Harriet DeLong. The role earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Nettleton was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on August 16, 1927. She won two Daytime Emmy Awards. One was for playing Susan B. Anthony in a 1977 television film, and the other was for a 1983 episode of Insight titled “A Gun for Mandy.” On Broadway she earned a Tony nomination for the 1976 revival of They Knew What They Wanted. From 1960 to 1967 she was married to radio storyteller Jean Shepherd, the voice behind A Christmas Story.

Lois Nettleton died on January 18, 2008, in Woodland Hills, California, at age 80. Carl Weathers joined in season seven as Hampton Forbes, a former Memphis police inspector hired as Sparta’s first Black police chief. The town council had pushed Gillespie into retirement, partly over his romance with Councilwoman DeLong. Forbes appeared in 28 episodes. When Gillespie and DeLong planned their wedding, Forbes was the best man.

Before Sparta, Weathers was already famous as Apollo Creed in the first four Rocky films. He starred opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator in 1987. Decades later he found a new generation of fans as Greef Karga on The Mandalorian, a role that earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

Carl Weathers died in his sleep on February 1, 2024, at his home in Los Angeles. He was 76. His family announced the news the next day. A death certificate later listed atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease as the cause, Entertainment Tonight reported. Six main cast members from the show remain with us, and the first is a musician who has never stopped working.

Nicholas was born in Detroit on July 12, 1944, and is 82 today. She also wrote six episodes of In the Heat of the Night, which launched her second career.

Her debut novel, Freshwater Road, came out in 2005 and won the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Award for debut fiction. In November 2025 she published a memoir, Finding Home, with Agate Bolden. Is Alan Autry Still Alive?

Alan Autry played Bubba Skinner, Gillespie’s loyal right hand, who called bigots “knotheads.” Before acting he was a quarterback. The Green Bay Packers drafted him in 1975, and he started three games in 1976 before coach Bart Starr cut him. His first steady TV work was on The Dukes of Hazzard, which had also filmed in Covington.

Autry was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on July 31, 1952. That makes him 74 today. After the show he played Rick Bradshaw on Grace Under Fire. Then he took a turn few TV stars ever make. He was elected mayor of Fresno, California, and served two terms from 2001 to 2009. More recently he played Ranger Chief Bridges on 9-1-1: Lone Star, and Wikipedia notes he hosts a midday show on Fresno’s KXEX 1550 AM.

This date carries weight for him. His wife of 31 years, Kimberlee Autry, died on October 18, 2025, after a six year battle with liver cancer, GV Wire reported. She had acted alongside him and David Hart in Forgiven. “Kim was a little handful of sunshine that lit up every place she went, and every person she met,” Autry wrote on Facebook. He added that he did not know how he would carry on, but that he would try, because she would want him to. Today marks one year since her death, and Autry is keeping that promise in Fresno.
