‘Brady Bunch’ Star Mike Lookinland Says He Lived His Lost Childhood In His 20s

Mike Lookinland spent much of his childhood playing Bobby Brady, the youngest son on one of television’s most wholesome family sitcoms. “The Brady Bunch” premiered in 1969 when he was just 8 years old, placing him in front of millions of viewers before he had even reached his teenage years.

According to Entertainment Weekly, years later, Lookinland admitted that growing up on television came with a cost. Mike Lookinland, after Brady Bunch fame, looked very different from the squeaky-clean world fans saw on screen. Once he reached adulthood, he said he finally experienced the freedom he missed as a child actor and went through a rebellious period in his 20s.

Speaking on “The Real Brady Bros” podcast, Lookinland explained that he essentially lived his childhood during his 20s because work had taken up so much of his actual youth. With money, a car, and independence, he described himself as fully “off the rails.” He also expressed relief that smartphones and social media did not exist at the time, joking that constant cameras could have made those years far more damaging.

His costar Christopher Knight, who played Peter Brady, remembered another influence that kept the young cast somewhat grounded. Knight said he and the other actors did not want to disappoint Robert Reed and Florence Henderson, who played family patriarch Mike Brady and his wife, Carol. Even so, several cast members later spoke openly about the struggles that followed childhood fame, including Maureen McCormick’s well-documented battles with addiction and an eating disorder.

Lookinland continued appearing in several “Brady Bunch” reunion projects, including “The Brady Bunch Variety Hour” and the later series “The Bradys.” Still, acting gradually became a much smaller part of his life. His occasional appearances with former costars have included a 2022 stint on “The Masked Singer” alongside Knight and Barry Williams. Away from television, Lookinland faced alcoholism before eventually getting sober. He married Kelly Wermuth in 1987, and the couple went on to have two children. He later moved into a very different career, running a small business that creates decorative concrete countertops, fireplaces, benches, and other pieces.

The story of Mike Lookinland after Brady Bunch success offers a revealing look at what happened once the cameras stopped rolling. Bobby Brady represented childhood innocence to generations of viewers, but the actor behind him needed years to reclaim parts of growing up that fame had interrupted. Today, his quieter life stands in sharp contrast to both his television childhood and the rebellious years that followed.
