According to AP News, for millions of viewers, Peter Cullen was more than the voice behind a cartoon robot. His calm authority helped turn Optimus Prime into one of animation’s most enduring heroes, while roles such as Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh showed just how much range he could bring to a microphone.

Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime in the syndicated 1984 Transformers series, a role that would define much of his career. Before the audition, he reportedly knew only that he would be reading for a character who transformed into a truck. Once he understood that Optimus was a heroic leader, he drew inspiration from his older brother Larry, a U.S. Marine who had served during the Vietnam War.

Cullen said he modeled Optimus after his brother, giving the character his mix of strength and compassion. That personal connection helped make Optimus’ messages about courage, sacrifice, and leadership especially memorable. He eventually returned as Optimus Prime for Michael Bay’s live-action Transformers films, beginning with the 2007 blockbuster and continuing through movies including Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, The Last Knight, Bumblebee, and Rise of the Beasts.

His Career Stretched Far Beyond ‘Transformers’

Long before Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen had already built an impressive career. He worked on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, appeared in comedy sketches connected to Sonny & Cher, and lent his voice to shows including The Smurfs and several G.I. Joe projects. He also became closely associated with Eeyore, voicing the gloomy but lovable donkey across numerous Winnie the Pooh productions. Other memorable jobs included playing KARR on Knight Rider and even creating the distinctive clicking sounds for the alien creature in Predator.

Cullen received a lifetime achievement honor at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023 and remained close to fans through convention appearances. His family asked people to honor his legacy through compassion, integrity, and service, repeating a phrase closely tied to him: “Be strong enough to be gentle.” It perfectly reflects the man who gave Optimus Prime a voice defined by courage and kindness for generations.
