Veterans Day: What’s Open And Closed On November 11

by Ruth A

Published November 11, 2025

Each year, Americans come together on November 11 to honor the people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Veterans Day, observed annually on the same date regardless of the weekday, marks the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. According to reports from USA Today, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that the day commemorates “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” when hostilities ceased, symbolizing peace and remembrance.

While the spirit of Veterans Day focuses on gratitude and reflection, it also brings a few changes to daily routines. Many government offices, banks, and postal services observe the federal holiday, which means closures can affect errands and business operations across the country.

If you’re wondering are banks open on Veterans Day, the short answer is no. Most major financial institutions—including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, PNC, Truist, Capital One, Citibank, and JPMorgan Chase—will be closed on Tuesday, November 11, in observance of the holiday. ATMs, however, will remain accessible for basic transactions. Similarly, all U.S. Postal Service locations will close, and regular mail delivery will pause for the day.

Despite these closures, essential services like grocery stores and restaurants will continue regular operations, allowing Americans to carry on with everyday tasks while reflecting on the meaning of Veterans Day. It’s one of the few federal holidays observed nationwide that still maintains its original date rather than being moved to a Monday, preserving its historical significance.

Though post offices will close, private shipping carriers such as UPS and FedEx will continue to operate. UPS pickup and delivery services will be available, though deliveries using UPS SurePost and UPS Mail Innovations may face slight delays because of the USPS holiday. FedEx will also maintain its regular service, including FedEx Office locations.

For those asking, is the stock market open on Veterans Day, Trading will proceed as usual. Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq remain open, though the bond market will close early in observance of the federal holiday. These exceptions make Veterans Day unique—while government and banking institutions pause, other sectors stay active, reflecting the balance between national reflection and ongoing economic activity.
