Tributes are pouring in to celebrate the incredible life of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100 following his wife Rosalynn Carter’s death in 2023. Also, the United States is preparing to honor the former longest-living US president as they declare January 9, 2025, as a national mourning day. Despite it being a business day, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will not be trading as they will join citizens in paying tribute to the late president.
President Joe Biden encouraged Americans to reflect on Jimmy Carter’s contributions and to celebrate a life devoted to service. Plans for Jimmy Carter’s memorial are in place as his burial will be held at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
US Stock Market is set to close on January 9th for Day of Mourning
Since the death of George H.W. Bush in 2018, this is the first time that the US financial markets will take a break to honor a former president. This reflects Jimmy Carter’s influence on Americans beyond politics. The President of the NYSE Group, Lynn Martin, also penned an emotional tribute to the late president, noting how he lived an impactful life. “Jimmy Carter, with humble roots as a farmer and family man, devoted his life to public service and defending our freedom.” While the bond markets will remain open, they’ll close early at 2 p.m. ET, according to instructions from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Jimmy Carter’s term as USA president started in 1977 and ended in 1981. His administration was focused on promoting peace, public service, and the advancement of human rights. His remains will lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda on January 7 to allow the public to pay their respects to the 39th president.
Jimmy Carter’s Legacy
In Joe Biden’s speech on the declaration of a national Day of Mourning for Jimmy Carter, he was emotional as he called on “the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr. I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance.”
As part of the event to honor Jimmy Carter’s death, flags will be flown at half-staff from Sunday and for the next 30 days. Jimmy Carter’s funeral is more than just a moment of remembrance; it is an opportunity for the nation to come together, reflect on his values, and celebrate a leader who believed in the power of compassion, integrity, and hope.
