When Michelle Pfeiffer was cast in Grease 2, she felt “terrified.” The 67-year-old actress opened up on the September 29 episode of the SmartLess podcast, recalling the pressure of joining a sequel to one of the most beloved musicals of all time. The original Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, had become a cultural phenomenon. Pfeiffer’s first leading role placed her in the spotlight at Rydell High, where she played Stephanie Zinone, the new leader of the Pink Ladies.

Despite her nerves, Pfeiffer embraced the challenge. She enjoyed performing and dancing in scenes like the bowling-themed number “Score Tonight.” She even kept her bowling ball as a memento. While Grease 2 initially flopped at the box office, it gradually gained a devoted fan base. The film eventually proved that some movies find their audience long after release.

Pfeiffer recalled worrying about living up to the first film’s success. “The first one was amazing and had such a cult following,” she said. Being paired with Maxwell Caulfield added pressure, especially with promotional ads labeling them “too hot.” She worried audiences might not respond as hoped. According to People, Yet Pfeiffer embraced her role, enjoying the energy of the musical and showcasing her singing and dancing for the first time in a leading role.

Over time, Grease 2 became a cult classic despite early criticism. Critics initially gave mixed reviews, but Pfeiffer and Caulfield drew praise for their talent and charisma. Pfeiffer said her favorite scene was “A Girl for All Seasons,” in which she dressed as a Christmas tree. The playful spirit of the film has helped it endure in the hearts of fans.
