MTV Announces It Will Play Music Videos 24/7 Again — With A Twist

by Ruth A

Published June 26, 2025

In a surprising and nostalgic twist, MTV has announced that it will once again focus on music videos, reviving its original mission that once made it a pop culture powerhouse. Starting this September, the network will dedicate its entire daytime lineup to airing music videos from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. For fans who grew up during MTV’s golden age, the news feels like a welcome return to simpler times.

MTV, which launched in 1981, changed the landscape of music and television by putting artists and their videos front and center. Over time, the network shifted toward reality shows and celebrity content. Now, with viewers craving retro content and genuine music discovery, MTV playing music videos again is hitting all the right notes for longtime fans.

The new initiative, called “MTV’s Music Video Block,” will feature a mix of current hits and classic throwbacks. Fans can expect to see vintage clips from the ’80s and ’90s alongside today’s top charting artists, giving younger audiences a chance to experience the format that once ruled television. The decision reflects a broader cultural yearning for nostalgia in the streaming era.

By returning to its roots, MTV hopes to reconnect with an audience that fondly remembers the debut of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” or Madonna’s early hits. Many fans took to social media to express their excitement, calling it a “full circle moment” for a network that once revolutionized how music was consumed.

The move also signals MTV’s effort to reclaim its relevance in a crowded media landscape. While YouTube and TikTok dominate music video consumption today, the curated programming and iconic branding of MTV still hold emotional weight. MTV playing music videos again brings structure and ceremony to music discovery that’s often missing in today’s algorithms.

Executives say this return isn’t just for nostalgia—it’s about preserving and celebrating music history. With themed hours, artist spotlights, and behind-the-scenes footage, the rebooted MTV will mix entertainment with music education. For longtime fans and new viewers alike, it’s a reminder of the magic that happens when music takes center stage.
