Since it was first released in 1996, Mission: Impossible has remained one of the most popular action franchises. With each installment, the stakes get higher, the quality of the movie gets better, and the stunts are more intense. Despite the number of films and the massive success of the franchise, Tom Cruise has continually pushed himself to the limit, giving each installment his best.

Even after decades of success, the 62-year-old actor has shown no signs of slowing down. His commitment to high-risk stunts in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has proved his dedication, but it has come at a cost. How far would the actor go? His latest film features some of the toughest action sequences he has ever attempted, including two that left him struggling, including one underwater and another high in the air.

Shooting Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has been physically demanding for Tom Cruise. He recently talked about two major stunts that tested his strength like never before. One took place underwater, where his character, Ethan Hunt, explores a sunken submarine. While wearing a specially designed suit, Cruise experienced a dangerous buildup of carbon dioxide in his body that left him struggling to stay conscious. The film’s director, Christopher McQuarrie, called it “physically punishing,” as Cruise had to fight through muscle fatigue and oxygen deprivation.

Another stunt involved Cruise hanging off a 1930s biplane mid-flight. The plane maintained a speed of over 120 miles per hour, and he had to train himself to breathe properly.  “When you stick your face out, going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen,” he said. There were times I would pass out physically; I was unable to get back into the cockpit.” The lack of oxygen at that speed caused him to pass out multiple times, making it one of his most dangerous stunts to date.
