Billy Joel is known as the “Piano Man” and one of the best-selling music artists of all time. In the past few weeks, his fans have been worried, and here’s why. The singer behind timeless hits like “Piano Man” (the song that became his signature and earned him the nickname he has today), “Vienna,” and “Uptown Girl” announced that he’d been diagnosed with a rare neurological condition, sparking rumors and fears that something far more serious was going on.

But now, the truth is this. Billy Joel isn’t dying. He’s facing a new health challenge, yes, but he’s still very much alive, full of spirit, and taking time to heal. And thanks to close friend Howard Stern, fans now have a little clarity and maybe even some peace of mind.

On The Howard Stern Show, Stern gave a calm, personal update after spending time with Joel. The two had met just two weeks earlier to celebrate Billy’s 76th birthday, and the mood was anything but grim. “He said, ‘You can tell people I’m not dying,’” Stern shared. “He just has to deal with some medical stuff.” Stern even played the guitar and sang for him.

The real story is this. Billy has been diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare condition that affects hearing, balance, and vision. It happens when fluid builds up in the brain, mostly in people over 65. While it is serious, it’s not a death sentence. It’s treatable with surgery and physical therapy. Billy is now following his doctor’s advice, stepping away from performances for now, and focusing fully on getting better.

Billy Joel has made it clear that his health comes first

Billy’s official statement made it clear: his health comes first. He apologized to fans for canceling shows, thanked them for their support, and promised he’d be back. “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,” he said. “Thank you for understanding.” His wife, Alexis Roderick Joel, also spoke up, reminding everyone that to the world, he’s a great figure, but at home, he’s simply a loving husband and father.

Together, they share two daughters, Della and Remy, and Billy is also the father of Alexa Ray Joel, whom he had with his ex-wife, Christie Brinkley. Alexis reassured everyone that he’s still strong, just resting. “Sometimes your health has to take priority,” she said. “In the grand scheme of things, he’s a healthy person… and he’s working on himself.” And that’s exactly what they are doing.
