This group outsold the Beatles and the Rolling Stones in 1967. They made a cult film with Jack Nicholson. And in fact, Jimi Hendrix once opened for them. The Monkees band started as a made-for-TV experiment and ended up becoming one of the most surprising music success stories of the 1960s.
Today, only one Monkee remains. Micky Dolenz, the voice behind “I’m a Believer” and “Last Train to Clarksville,” is 80, and still going strong. After the losses of Davy Jones, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith, Dolenz is now carrying the torch alone.
