Wendy Williams used to be one of the biggest voices in daytime television. Unfortunately, the former talk show host is now facing a very different chapter of life that involves health challenges, strict care, and public concern. A new documentary sheds light on her current living situation and the events that led to a major change in her care.
According to “TRAPPED: What Is Happening to Wendy Williams?”, which aired on May 19, Wendy had a troubling incident on her 60th birthday that reportedly led to her being moved to a more controlled part of her assisted living facility. The hour-long special gives viewers a closer look at Wendy’s life behind the scenes — her medical diagnoses, her guardianship, and the reality of living with dementia.

In the documentary, investigative journalist Diane Dimond claims Wendy was initially living on a less-restrictive floor of her care facility in New York. She allegedly took an elevator up to the rooftop bar on her birthday. What was meant to be a small celebration turned into a relapse, as she reportedly had several drinks and got drunk.
Because of that incident, Wendy was said to have been transferred to the fifth floor, a locked memory care unit. This new floor limits her freedom, allowing her to leave only with special permission from her guardian. The move highlights the seriousness of her condition and the extra care she now requires.
Wendy Williams says she is fine, but the doctors are not convinced
Despite the claims, Wendy has publicly said she’s doing better. In a March appearance on The View, she confirmed she celebrated her 60th birthday in July 2024 but said she is now sober and living alcohol-free. “I’m going on with my life,” she said. “I’ve had my devices, and I’m doing fine.”
However, not everyone is convinced. Some doctors featured in the documentary questioned if her condition is truly frontotemporal dementia (FTD) or possibly alcohol-related dementia. Brain health expert Dr. Daniel Amen stated that alcohol is one of the top causes of cognitive decline and may even be behind Wendy’s current struggles.
