Mark Hamill, who played the role of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, has opened up about the reactions he gets from lovers of the Star Wars franchise over the last 20-30 years anytime they met him in real life. He shared this during an episode of the Smartless Podcast.
The Original Star Wars franchise was shot in 1977 when Mark Hamill himself was just 24. The movie immediately became popular among viewers and has remained one of the evergreen franchises of all time. However, young fans find it hard to believe that 73-year-old Mark Hamill they see now is the same 24-year-old man who played Luke Skywalker in the movie.
Mark Hamill still shocked at how fans react when they meet him
In the podcast, Mark Hamill revealed that fans are often shocked to see how their favorite Luke Skywalker has aged over the years. A greater number of viewers of the Star Wars franchise today are young children who may believe that the movie was just released a few weeks ago since there is “nothing to really date it in terms of models of cars or clothing or whatever. So, they have no concept of time.”
Some fans even look at Mark Hamill in horror as if he did not watch his appearance or strive to age gracefully. They find it shocking to believe that he now looks so much different from what he was in the 1977 movie.
Young fans feel disconnected from Mark Hamill now
A particular fan noted that she had also fallen victim to something similar after seeing the movie. She had a crush on the young Mark Hamill until she discovered she was watching Star Wars 25 years after it was shot.
While most are not interested in the aged Mark Hamill, this fan believes that young people rarely appreciate the true beauty of aging. Later, when the actor was asked if he could ever play the role of Luke Skywalker again, the Star Wars star shared that he had had enough.
