Adrienne Barbeau was born and raised in California, where she began her performing career entertaining American troops across Southeast Asia as a dancer. In the mid-1960s, she moved to New York City to pursue her dreams, working as a go-go dancer in clubs.
Barbeau eventually broke into Broadway, starting in the chorus of Fiddler on the Roof in 1968. She quickly made a name for herself in New York’s theater scene, but it was her performance as Rizzo in Grease that launched her into the spotlight, earning her a Theatre World Award. She gained national fame when she played Carol Traynor, Bea Arthur’s daughter, in the 1970s sitcom Maude. Barbeau credits Arthur as a role model in the comedy line, noting that there were times when she still heard “Bea’s delivery coming out of [her] mouth.”
