Bobby Flay took to Instagram to express his sorrow and gratitude, thanking fans for their support during this difficult time. In his tribute, he described his father as a “proud native Manhattanite” who lived a full and accomplished life. He shared a moment from Bill’s relationship with Sophie, recalling how he once asked her for just one thing: to be an interesting person.

His granddaughter also shared a carousel of photos, describing many of the fun, interesting and sweet moments she shared with him. In addition to the images, Sophie also penned an emotional message, calling her grandfather “her whole world.” She talked about his love for education, the arts, and even pop culture, noting his appreciation for Andrea Bocelli, Christina Aguilera, and Nicki Minaj. She also described how he always dressed sharply, even for FaceTime calls, and how their walks together always included a bit of playful dancing.

Bill Flay paved the way for Bobby’s culinary career

Beyond his role as a father and grandfather, Bill Flay lived a life filled with achievements. He served as a Navy lieutenant before pursuing a career in law, eventually becoming a restaurateur alongside Joe Allen. His work in the restaurant industry helped his son’s culinary career, as he helped Bobby secure his first job at Joe Allen’s Manhattan eatery.

Bill returned to school in his later years to complete a master’s degree in art history. His love for culture, history, and food left an indelible mark on his family. It’s no surprise that his son also pursued similar paths. Bill may have passed, but his legacy lives on through his children.
