A woman believed to be the world’s oldest person has reportedly passed away after an extraordinary lifespan of 122 years. Lin Shemu, born in the Fujian province of China, recently died on January 1.
Her official documents indicated that she was born on 18 June 1902, and If the records are accurate, Shemu would have lived for an astonishing 122 years and 197 days, thus surpassing the title previously held by Jeanne Calment, who lived from 1875 to 1997 and was widely acknowledged as the longest-lived person in recorded history.

Shemu’s life journey spanned an extraordinarily significant period of history, beginning from her birth during the Gungxu period of the Qing Dynasty in China and the period when Theodore Roosevelt and Lord Salisbury were both Heads of State in the United States of America and Great Britain respectively.
Living her entire life in the Fujian province, she witnessed the two world wars, two devastating events that shaped the course of the 20th century. Despite the troubles around her, Shemu enjoyed a relatively healthy life with no serious medical challenges except the loss of her eyesight due to old age as well as injuries to both legs during a fall.

Speaking about her mother’s life, Shemu’s youngest, who is now 77 years old, shared details about her longevity. He explained that all through her long life, his mother maintained a high sense of contentment and good humor and never had a fight with anybody.
He added that his late mom taught all her children some valuable life lessons, revealing that she made them understand that there was nothing too difficult to achieve. The 77-year-old also shared that, according to his mother, the secret behind her long life was the regular consumption of a healthy diet and getting enough sleep.
