Frito-Lay has called for a recall of the 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips currently present in the market. They voluntarily recalled the product after they discovered the presence of an undeclared milk allergen in their product.
The potato chip company released a statement through the Food & Drug Administration’s website stating that the popular potato chips ‘may contain undeclared milk after a consumer brought it to their attention. However, consumers have also been urged to check their chip bags for specific manufacturing details to ensure their safety.
Why are Lays potato chips recalled?
Frito-Lay decided to recall the chips after a consumer discovered the undeclared allergen in a batch, which might cause mild symptoms like hives or severe reactions such as anaphylaxis for individuals who are lactose intolerant and can be life-threatening.
While this problem affects only a limited batch of chips, Frito-Lay has recalled the product as a precautionary measure. Only the batch of products distributed in Oregon and Washington from November 3, 202,4 were affected. The impacted products can be identified by their UPC code (28400 31041), a “Guaranteed Fresh” date of February 11, 2025, and manufacturing codes 6462307xx or 6463307xx.
What should consumers with the product do?
Consumers who have purchased the affected chips should not eat the chips as it is currently flagged as non-edible. Rather, they are advised to dispose of the product or return it to the store they bought it for a full refund. Frito-Lay is also working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to resolve the problem and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. The company is also reviewing its production and labeling processes.
