Robin Williams’ legacy as told by his son Zak
At the 12th Annual Bring Change to Mind Revels & Revelations gala, Zachary Williams, Robin Williams’ son, detailed his father’s legacy during the event. The 41-year-old Zak recalled how Robin used to cater to the needy and give a helping hand to strangers on the road. Robin Williams’ philanthropic nature not only helped those who needed it, but it also amazed his children and still inspired them.
“When I was a little kid and we’d be walking in San Francisco where I grew up, he would stop, talk to someone on the street, a homeless person, say, ‘Hey boss, what can I do for you?’” Zak said. “And we’d see him get meals, food, money.” Robin Williams practically showed his children the importance of “kindness” in society.
Zak noted that Robin Williams’ legacy did not extend to a few, he also supported charity organizations and was active in fundraisings, awareness programs, and support for all. Hence, the children do not only remember their father’s legacy, they are also intentional about carrying it on. They desire to continue what their father was passionate about in his lifetime.
Robin Williams’ mental health challenges
Robin Williams passed away in 2014 from suicide after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, but an autopsy later revealed the real cause of his death as Lewy body dementia. His oldest son, Zak, whom he had with his first wife, Valerie Velardi, recalled his father’s struggle with depression and frustration before he died.
“There was just more anxiety and depression and just things he was experiencing,” Zak explained during an interview. He had wished he could help his father by providing the healing and comfort he needed, but after Robin Williams passed away at 63, which left a severe blow on his mental health, he started raising awareness about mental health, especially for men.
Presently, Zak serves as the Chair of the non-profit organization Bring Change to Mind, founded by Glenn Close. The organization aims to raise public awareness and create an understanding of mental health. Zak and his siblings continue their father’s legacy by helping those in need and posting tributes to him on social media.
