King Charles To Undergo Surgery Next Week As Kate Middleton Is Hospitalized

The palace announced two big health updates from its biggest members

The Royal Family is contending with several developing health scares, two palace statements recently revealed. King Charles will be undergoing a surgical procedure next week, according to a Buckingham Palace announcement that followed shortly after Kensington Palace revealed that Kate Middleton had been hospitalized.

Traditionally, the Royal Family keeps details about its members’ health as private as possible. However, protocol has seen this norm broken whenever a member cannot attend a scheduled public engagement, or whenever a senior member is hospitalized. Indeed, both have had to reschedule their scheduled engagements in order to heal.

Buckingham Palace recently shared a transparent message about 75-year-old King Charles, his health, and upcoming surgery.

“In common with thousands of men each year, the King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate,” the palace’s Wednesday statement reads. “His Majesty’s condition is benign, and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure.” Although King Charles had multiple engagements scheduled for this week, they have already been postponed due to his upcoming surgery.

Since it is uncommon for the palace to share health details, multiple outlets have theorized that the palace is using this to normalize medical conditions and procedures such as this, to give those afflicted a platform and voice. An enlarged prostate is common in men over 50; one in three men in that age group will develop it. While it generally isn’t a dire medical threat, it can impact how a person urinates.

The King’s health update came roughly two hours after a statement concerning Kate Middleton, now styled Catherine, Princess of Wales since the death of Queen Elizabeth II shifted several royal positions. Kensington Palace assured followers that Kate was deeply remorseful that she could not make it to her public engagements as scheduled; however, she had been suffering from abdominal pain that reportedly needed medical intervention culminating in a surgical procedure on Tuesday night. Specifics have not been provided, but according to PEOPLE, the condition is not cancerous.

“The surgery was successful, and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery,” the statement revealed. “Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.”

Her husband, Prince William, will not carry out any of his royal duties while she is hospitalized or in the immediate aftermath of when she is discharged.

The statement further adds that Kate “appreciates the interest this statement will generate,” though adds that a desire for privacy will keep updates limited from here on out.
