The 2023 Emmy Awards marked a bittersweet evening for the Presley family, particularly for 34-year-old Riley Keough. On January 12, 2023, her mother Lisa Marie Presley died. So, when Riley attended the Emmys on Monday, it was with her grandmother, Priscilla, by her side, instead of her mother.

Riley is the granddaughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, and the daughter of the late Lisa Marie with her first husband, musician Danny Keough. Lisa Marie was just 54 when she died of cardiac arrest at her California home. The aftermath of her passing left much of Riley’s life in chaos. Here is how the lasting effects impacted her recent red carpet walk.

Riley and Priscilla appeared at the Emmys arm in arm in coordinating black evening formalwear. Riley wore a Chanel dress from the Spring-Summer 2023 collection with matching Chanel High Jewelry, shoes, and bag. She wore her dark hair tied back to reveal a large pair of silver earrings.

Beside her, Priscilla had her signature red hair in its usual untied style framing her face. Like her granddaughter, the Naked Gun star was spotted wearing Chanel. Her outfit consisted of a black silk blouse and a black wool and silk Jacquard skirt.

It was a night of feeling more than ever what was lost, but also an occasion of celebration: Riley was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie thanks to her performance in Daisy Jones & the Six.

This was Riley’s very first Emmy nomination, and although ultimately the win went to Ali Wong, celebrating her role in Beef, but there was still plenty to be grateful for that night among the grandmother-granddaughter duo.

“When my mom passed, there was a lot of chaos in every aspect of our lives,” shared Riley in a 2023 Vanity Fair interview. “Everything felt like the carpet had been ripped out and the floor had melted from under us.”

It even saw the two family members, separated by a generation gone too soon, battling it out in court for control over Lisa Marie’s estate. They at last settled out of court, with Riley paying Priscilla $1 million and $400,000 in legal fees.

“There was a bit of upheaval, but now everything’s going to be how it was,” assured Riley. “She’s a beautiful woman, and she was a huge part of creating my grandfather’s legacy and Graceland. It’s very important to her.”

Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Daisy Jones & the Six premiered on March 3, 2023 as a limited series, so it’s unlikely there will be a season two. It is based on the 2019 Taylor Jenkins novel of the same name. The series netted nine Emmy nominations in total.

Congratulations, Riley!
