
Susan Sarandon reflects on her experience filming The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In the new documentary Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror, the 78-year-old looks back on her character, Janet Weiss, and Rocky Horror, played by model Peter Hinwood. Although Sarandon was not shy about filming some scenes, she noted that Hinwood was afraid because it was his first time.
While Richard O’Brien conceived the story when he was still an unemployed actor, the 1975 film became a worldwide phenomenon, captivating viewers across multiple generations. It has been about five decades since its premiere, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show remains the longest-running theatrical release in history.

She opened up about the journey of her character, Janet Weiss, describing her evolution from a reserved young woman to one who embraces her desires and breaks free from societal expectations. Sarandon believes the film sends an important message about self-discovery and breaking limitations.
She recalled Janet making efforts “to appeal to her idiot boyfriend” while experiencing a profound transformation. One of the film’s most memorable moments is during the song “Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch Me,” where Janet performs alongside Rocky (Peter Hinwood). Sarandon recalled that he was pretty shy and inexperienced, making the shoot more challenging. Susan Sarandon also noted that Hinwood was reserved, making the scene “traumatizing” for him. He was nervous because he had no prior experience with the production. Hinwood, now 78, has since moved away from acting. Reflecting on his performance, he admitted that he had never been an actor and was only following instructions.
Behind the scenes
Co-star Nell Campbell, who played the role of Columbia, also shared her thoughts on Hinwood’s experience, laughing about his unique position among the cast despite it being his first time acting. Regardless of his initial insecurities, Hinwood has come to appreciate his role in the film. He acknowledged his skill and praised the resulting performance.
Casting director Joel Thurm also recalled his first impression of Sarandon, recognizing her talent very early on. He shared how he had known that she would have a great career in the industry.
