Family comes in infinite shapes and definitions, a reality Goldie Hawn‘s children Kate and Oliver Hudson are acutely aware of after their mom split and got together with Kurt Russell. The siblings now very comfortably consider Russell a father figure in their lives but speaking of their biological father, Bill Hudson, they can still feel overcome with emotion.
Hawn met musician Bill Hudson in the summer of ’75 after the two crossed paths by chance on the same flight. Discussing the falling out that led to the couple’s divorce gets messy fast, with both Hawn and her two eldest children dismissing Hudson as absentee at best and hurtful at worst. But, Kate and Oliver know too well, the reality they must live with is even messier than that.

44-year-old Kate is a Golden Globe-winning actress whose credits include Almost Famous (2000), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), and Glass Onion (2022). Similarly, Oliver is a television actor known for playing Adam Rhodes in CBS’s Rules of Engagement from 2007 to 2013, along with Jeff Fordham in ABC’s Nashville, and Wes Gardner in the Fox horror comedy Scream Queens.

The family’s fame, Bill claimed, meant that they were doing interviews that tarnished his name. “She gives interviews every time she has a film out, and now Kate does too,” said Bill, “and they present this story to the world about how I ‘abandoned’ the family and how her partner [actor Kurt Russell] is the only ‘real’ man in their lives.”
Indeed, contact has been limited, especially between Bill and Kate, but in 2018, Oliver confirmed that he had exchanged “some texts” with his Bill and overall, the relationship between the dad and his kids has undergone relative improvement. In fact, on Father’s Day 2021, Oliver gave a shoutout to not just Russell but Bill as well – along with Warren Beatty, in an Instagram post with a caption that emotionally ended, “#itsokaytocry.”
Kate and Oliver are thinking about their family in a bigger picture
Between Bill, Hawn, and Russell, these individuals represent a very unique blended family with a lot of bridges connecting one another. Kate has been mindful of just how big their family is because of these bonds that have been formed over time.
For one thing, Bill actually has five children total: two were with Laverne & Shirley star Cindy Williams and was with girlfriend Caroline Graham. Meanwhile, Hawn and Russell biologically share son Wyatt, while Russell has son Boston with actress Season Hubley.
“I was thinking – I’ve been thinking a lot about Dad,” Kate mused in an episode of her podcast with Oliver, Sibling Rivalry. “I’ve been thinking about our sisters that we don’t spend any time with, and our brother. Brothers. We’ve got four siblings we don’t spend any time with.”
She continued, “We’ve been talking so much about sibling relationships, and distraught relationships. And yet, we don’t ever acknowledge the fact that we have four other siblings – four. So I’ve been thinking a lot about the Hudsons. Thinking that it’s important that we reach out with all of our siblings and maybe connect with them a little bit.”
