Maurice Benard Reflects On ‘General Hospital’ Success Amid 60th Anniversary

As General Hospital is set to mark its 60th anniversary, Maurice Benard, who played Sonny Corinthos on the show,  reveals the secret behind the show’s continued success during an interview with Fox News Digital. Bernard praised lovers of the show for their committed effort and support.

“Let me tell you, the fans of ‘General Hospital,’ there are no fans like those fans,” Bernard said. “I know now creating another show how important it is to have those loyal fans because they’ll just stay with you to the end.”

Having been a part of General Hospital for the past three decades, Benard also spoke about the show’s impressive milestone accomplishment. “No show has been on 60 years,” he said. “I think it’s the longest, and it’s just an honor to be on 30. It’s great that I have a job that long, man.”

The 64-year-old also described other cast members as a family, noting that while it used to feel like high school, it now feels more like college. “Obviously your character has to be very popular to be on that long because people come and go,” Bernard stated. “So I’ve had, I think, the best character ever. Just fun to play, man.”

Maurice Bernard reveals that TV has become a side attraction for people

Benard went on to explain that television has become an essential means of escape for people nowadays. “With the way things are going right now in the country and whatnot,” he said. “It’s good to be able to sit down for an hour and just not think about anything but just acting and crazy stories and people getting cheated on, whatever you watch on these things.”

Apart from his role in the series, Bernard has also launched his own podcast, State of Mind, which is available for streaming on YouTube. Bernard stated that the podcast aims to raise awareness about the significance of mental health, “To me, it means, surviving torment and making yourself better.”
