An age-old question. Cookies? Or cake? Fortunately, the best of both worlds has become an option. Oreo has introduced a new flavor for its cookies, Blackout Cake. The cookie brand teased the new taste on Instagram, but be advised: it is listed as a limited edition.
Since its introduction by Nabisco in 1912, Oreo cookie sandwiches have gotten increasingly creative with their flavors over the years. There are some classics you’d expect, like birthday cake and chocolate hazelnut, but there’s also been marshmallow creme flavored after Peeps, and even peanut butter and jelly. Oreo Blackout Cake has gotten some strong reactions too.

Earlier this week, the official Oreo Instagram page announced the Blackout Cake flavor. “Cake lovers unite for OREO Blackout Cake!” it shared. “Our NEW Limited Edition Flavor hits the shelves April 3rd.” According to Oreo, between the usual cookie layers, this sandwich boasts double layers of both chocolate cake and dark chocolate cake cremes.

The brand had been hinting at a new flavor even before giving it a name, sharing a picture of a screen full of chocolate on top of layers of… chocolate! That would give foodies time to get ready, since Today notes that these particular cookies will be available while supplies lasts, so this won’t be around forever.
Will consumers be missing out?

There have been some wild flavor hybrids out there, thanks to the minds of brands like Oreos and Kit-Kats. Oreo has boasted things like lemon twist, caramel apple, and even candy corn for the Halloween lovers out there. But the Oreo Blackout Cake has some cookie lovers asking, “When are yall going to be creative again?”
This comes in no small part because of the comparisons consumers are drawing between this new flavor and Oreo’s preexisting Ultimate Chocolate Oreo. “I love chocolate, but this looks a lot like the Ultimate Chocolate Oreo cookie we already got, but with one less layer,” one person noted. Will you still be grabbing a bag when they’re out?
