The quote ”There is no revenge so complete as forgiveness” is obviously not in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s playbook of life, as he decided to repay a prank played on him 34 years ago by co-star Danny DeVito on the set of their 1988 comedy, Twins.
Arnold revealed that the 77-year-old is known to be very humorous and enjoys messing with his co-stars while on set, noting, “He’s a brutal prankster, and he’s as funny in real life as he is on the screen.” Interestingly, Arnold’s attempted payback came during preparations for the sequel to Twins,
Danny DeVito pranks Arnold on set
During the making of the original Twins, Danny would frequently prepare pasta for himself and Arnold, after which they would smoke cigars before heading back to the set. This became the norm — until Danny made his move. Like any other day, they ate and then proceeded to cap things off with a smoke — Arnold unaware that Danny had actually slipped some marijuana into his cigar.
When Arnold went back to the set to continue filming, the effect of the pot kicked in, which made him forget the lines he had learned earlier. “I’m a fanatic about memorizing my lines,” he explained, “so I never touch the script once I arrive on a set, but when we got back after lunch, Danny said his line, and I just stood there.”

Hilariously, while Arnold was in a state of delirium, Danny “was laughing up a storm.” Thankfully, director Ivan Reitman, who had already gotten wind of what happened, filmed close-ups of DeVito to save time while Arnold read his lines on the page. After a while, he was able to remember his dialogue.
34 years later, Schwarzenegger goes for revenge
While Arnold remembers the prank as a fun moment, it doesn’t mean he was ready to let Danny off the hook that easily. The actor, who keeps his fans posted about his life through his newsletters, reminded them about the 1988 prank as he shared a video of him proudly trying to return the favor.
The film was going to be titled Triplets, and at one point the two actors were seen together with Ivan while meeting with new addition Tracy Morgan, who was to play the role of a long-lost third sibling, over zoom. In a move that didn’t exactly work out, Arnold thought it was the perfect time to pay Danny back.
Arnold presented a marijuana-laced cigar to Danny as an act of revenge, but the latter did not let his guard down as he immediately noticed it. “[Danny] still has the nose of a bloodhound, and sniffed out the special ingredient right away,” Schwarzenegger detailed in his newsletter.
Schwarzenegger isn’t new to smoking Marijuana
Arnold isn’t a stranger to marijuana, as he admitted he used to smoke and work out with comedian Tommy Chong. However, in 1975 he began to take his health and fitness seriously and has since made efforts to cut down on them.
It should be noted that Triplets as a project is in limbo, as in February of this year — shortly after the moment described above took place — Ivan Reitman died at the age of 75.
