Gap Closes 40 Stores Globally As Retail Apocalypse Rages On

Gap just closed about 40 of their store locations worldwide
  • Many analysts are saying a “retail apocalypse” is happening, due to all of the stores closing. 
  • Gap recently closed 40 locations around the world.

The clothing retailer Gap recently closed about 40 stores globally. About 22 of these were located in the United States. For instance, the stores closed on Sunday, as part of a plan to close about 230 stores over the next two years.

Gap released a statement on the store closings. It read, “We are committed to quickly, thoughtfully, and decisively addressing stores that are underperforming or don’t fit our vision for the future of Gap.

The statement continued, “We are confident these closures will strengthen the health of the specialty fleet moving forward and will serve as a more appropriate foundation for brand revitalization.”

As many Gap stores are closing, Old Navy and Athleta stores are opening new locations. All of these stores are under the same parent company. Here is a list of the Gap stores that closed on Sunday:
