Ask most fans who the masked man really was, and they will answer "John Reid" without blinking. They are half right. On the radio show and the classic ABC series, the hero's last name was Reid, but his first name was never once spoken on the air. "John" came along later. It surfaced in radio reference books in the 1960s, became official on screen in the 1981 film The Legend of the Lone Ranger, and stayed put when Disney made its 2013 movie. So the Lone Ranger real name most people know is John Reid, even though the original shows only ever gave fans half of it. The story begins in January 1933, when the Lone Ranger made his radio debut on WXYZ in Detroit. By the time The Lone Ranger reached television on ABC, where it ran from 1949 to 1957, the character was firmly established as a Texas Ranger named Reid, the lone survivor of an ambush. Clayton Moore played him on TV, except for a stretch of 52 episodes in 1952 and 1953 when John Hart took over. And riding beside him, as every kid with a cap gun knew, was his faithful companion Tonto, played on TV by Jay Silverheels. The Short Answer On The Lone Ranger's Real Name Jay Silverheels as Tonto / Everett Collection The surname is solid canon, and it comes straight from his origin story, in which he rides with his older brother, Captain Dan Reid of the Texas Rangers. The first name is another matter entirely. According to Wikipedia's history of the character, his first name was never specified in any of the radio or television shows. Columnist John Waelti, writing in The Monroe Times, came to the same conclusion after years of following both versions. "So far as I know, in neither of these media is his first name ever specified," he wrote. Where The Name John Came From THE LONE RANGER, from left: Clayton Moore, Jay Silverheels, (ca. Season 5, 1956), 1949-57. ph: TV Guide / courtesy Everett Collection The name seems to have entered the record through reference books rather than scripts. Wikipedia traces it to Radio's Golden Age, a 1966 guide to old-time radio by Frank Buxton and Bill Owen, and the Albany Herald credits the same book, along with the liner notes of a Lone Ranger record. Once later reference works copied it, the name stuck. Some fans point instead to a 1953 anniversary radio broadcast as the source, but Wikipedia notes that the first name is never actually mentioned in that episode. Decades later, Hollywood made it official. In The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981), Klinton Spilsbury played John Reid, a young law student riding with his brother Dan's posse, and in Disney's The Lone Ranger (2013), Armie Hammer took on the same name. Fox News described that version as "John Reid (Armie Hammer), a city-educated, district attorney and all-around nice guy." What The Radio Show And TV Series Actually Said The Lone Ranger / Wikipedia Surprisingly, the radio show began without any origin story at all. The ambush tale took hold later and became the version fans know best, and the TV series told it in a three-part arc that opened with "Enter the Lone Ranger" on September 15, 1949. In that telling, six Texas Rangers chase Butch Cavendish's gang, only to be led into a trap at Bryant's Gap by a guide secretly working for the outlaws. Five Rangers die there, including Captain Dan Reid. His younger brother survives, and Tonto nurses him back to health, even digging a sixth grave so the gang will believe no one lived. From cloth taken from his brother's vest, the survivor makes his black mask. Canon was not always this tidy, though. Republic Pictures' 1938 movie serial revealed its hero in the final chapter as a Texas Ranger named Allen King, and the AFI Catalog credits Lee Powell as "The Lone Ranger also known as Allen King." The 1939 sequel serial gave him yet another name, Bill Andrews, and a 2003 TV movie went its own way entirely and called him Luke Hartman. The Reid Family Tree, From Dan Reid To The Green Hornet View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Book Rack (@charlottebookrack) The Reid name ended up doing more work than most fans realize. In 1942 the radio show introduced Dan Reid, the Lone Ranger's teenage nephew and the son of his late brother, and Chuck Courtney later played Dan in 14 episodes of the TV series. Here is where it gets fun. The same WXYZ team also produced The Green Hornet, whose hero was newspaper publisher Britt Reid, and Britt's father was named Dan Reid. On November 11, 1947, the radio episode "Too Hot to Handle" connected the dots. According to Tangent Online, Britt confesses he is the Green Hornet, and his father points to a picture of the masked man and says he once rode with him. The Lone Ranger is never named in that scene, but listeners understood: Britt Reid was his great-nephew. Wikipedia notes that because the two characters are now owned separately, later versions of the Western mostly ignore the family link. What The Creators Left Unsaid View this post on Instagram A post shared by Steve Hoffman (@stevehoffman.tv) The character was born in Detroit radio, and sources credit station owner George W. Trendle, writer Fran Striker, or both with dreaming him up. According to Encyclopedia.com, Trendle developed the concept and Striker wrote most of the radio episodes. Neither man left a known on-air answer to the first-name question, and their radio show never adopted the serial's Allen King either. For two decades of broadcasts, "Reid" was all the audience got. Whether that was a deliberate choice or a question that never came up, no surviving statement from the creators settles it. Why The Question Still Matters THE LONE RANGER, from left: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, 2013. ph: Peter Mountain/©Walt Disney Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection For many of us, the real answer to who the Lone Ranger was has always been Clayton Moore. He played the part in 169 TV episodes and in two feature films, The Lone Ranger (1956) and The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold (1958), and for years afterward he kept making appearances in character. Moore died on December 28, 1999, at 85. Beside him in 217 episodes stood Jay Silverheels, a Mohawk actor from Canada, as Tonto. Together they turned a voice on the radio into faces a generation of kids grew up with. You can see where their show ranks among the best classic TV Westerns of the '50s and '60s, or brush up on more little-known facts about The Lone Ranger. So the next time someone asks for the Lone Ranger's real name, you can give them the whole story. He was always a Reid. The "John" came from a radio reference book, and Hollywood didn't make it official until 1981, nearly 50 years after that first broadcast out of Detroit. To the kids who grew up hearing that hoofbeat, he never needed a first name anyway.
