She began writing songs as a child, appeared on local radio by age 11 and performed at the Grand Ole Opry at 13. After graduating from high school, she headed for Nashville and eventually found national fame alongside Porter Wagoner. Her solo career produced some of country music’s most enduring songs, including “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene,” “Here You Come Again,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You,” the latter of which became an international phenomenon when Whitney Houston recorded it decades later. Parton ultimately wrote an estimated 3,000 songs and sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Yet Parton often made clear that songwriting mattered more to her than any trophy. “At the end of the day, I hope that I will be remembered as a good songwriter,” she once wrote. “The songs are my legacy.” Dolly Parton becomes a national treasure View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dolly Parton (@dollyparton) Parton also became nearly as famous for giving back as she was for performing. She helped turn Dollywood into one of Tennessee’s best-known attractions and founded the Imagination Library, inspired in part by her father’s inability to read or write, to provide free books to young children. She also supported scholarships, disaster relief and numerous other charitable causes, and donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2020 toward research that helped support development of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Her combination of humor, generosity and an ability to remain connected to her Tennessee roots helped make her a rare figure beloved well beyond the world of country music. She had dealt with health problems in the final year of her life and canceled a planned Las Vegas residency in May 2026 while undergoing treatment. Still, just four days before her death, Parton told People that she was continuing to work and remained focused on the future. “I’ve dreamed myself into a corner and I still have so many things I want to achieve,” she said. That determination was pure Dolly: a woman who turned an impoverished childhood in the Tennessee mountains into an extraordinary life filled with songs, laughter, rhinestones and generosity — and who became, to millions of people, something much more than a country music star.
