For television fans who remember the late 1970s, few sitcom pairings were quite like Mork and Mindy. Robin Williams brought unpredictable, rapid-fire energy to the alien visitor from Ork, while Pam Dawber gave the comedy its warm and grounded center. Together, they turned an unusual premise into a television favorite that ran for four seasons from 1978 to 1982. The premise may have been outlandish, but the relationship between Mork and Mindy gave the series its heart. Mork arrived on Earth knowing little about human behavior, allowing the show to turn everyday customs into comedy as Mindy attempted to explain everything from romance to family life. Many of the familiar performers from the series have died, including Williams, who died in 2014 at age 63. Of the show's two title stars, Dawber remains the surviving half of the duo that helped make “Nanu Nanu” part of television history. The show's supporting cast also gave Mork and Mindy a larger world to inhabit. Conrad Janis, who played Mindy’s father Fred McConnell, brought decades of acting experience to the series. After 'Mork & Mindy,' he continued appearing in television and film, but acting was only part of his creative life. Janis was also an accomplished jazz musician and led the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band, giving him a career that stretched well beyond sitcoms. He died in 2022 at age 94. Elizabeth Kerr, who played Mindy’s grandmother Cora Hudson, also added a warm family presence to the show. She continued acting after 'Mork & Mindy,' including appearances in films such as 'Frankie and Johnny' and 'Going Berserk.' Kerr spent much of her life working in acting and theater before her death in 2000 at age 82. Pam Dawber played Mindy McConnell, the young woman who befriends Mork after the alien arrives on Earth. Her character provided an important balance to Williams' famously spontaneous style. While Mork could leap from voices to physical comedy in seconds, Mindy often served as the relatable human presence trying to make sense of everything happening around her. His improvisational abilities became such an important part of the show that scripts reportedly left room for him to depart from the written dialogue, and Dawber had to react to whatever her costar might produce in the moment. Her comparatively understated performance gave Williams the freedom to be outrageous without allowing scenes to completely lose their emotional center. The role became Dawber's breakthrough, but her career continued after the sitcom ended. She went on to star in My Sister Sam and appeared in television movies and other series before eventually stepping away from regular acting. Years later, she reunited with Williams on his CBS comedy in 2014. She later appeared on NCIS as investigative journalist Marcie Warren, sharing the screen with her real-life husband, longtime NCIS star Mark Harmon. CBS records her appearances in the role during the show's 2021 seasons. Tom Poston, meanwhile, brought his trademark deadpan style to Franklin Delano Bickley. Already a familiar television comedian, Poston went on to appear in classics including 'The Bob Newhart Show' and 'Newhart,' building a long career around his understated delivery and offbeat timing. Winters had built his reputation through the same kind of fearless improvisation and character work that Williams admired, making the two a natural comedic pairing. Beyond 'Mork & Mindy,' Winters appeared in 'It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World,' voiced characters in projects such as 'The Smurfs,' and received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 1999. He died in 2013 at age 87. Away from the screen, Dawber built a lasting Hollywood marriage with Mark Harmon. The two married in 1987 and raised two sons while largely keeping their family life out of the spotlight. Dawber's decision to make acting less of a priority reflected a very different path from the relentless television schedule that had made her famous in her twenties. Dawber and Williams also remained connected long after 'Mork & Mindy' ended.
