Most kids beg to be poolside all summer during their vacation. If you have a pool or are bringing your kids or grandkids to the pool this summer, there are several things you need to know first. Proper attire and sunscreen are some of the most important things you’ll need for a safe and fun summer.
Here is a list of things you should never, ever let kids do at the pool.
1. Never let kids go without sunscreen
Make sure you apply sunscreen to your child’s entire body before they put on their swimsuit. This will ensure you don’t miss any areas or forget by the time you get to the pool. Reapply every few hours (60 to 90 minutes, depending on the sunscreen brand), especially after they get out of the water and use at least SPF 30.
2. Never let them swim or play unsupervised, plus, they need to wear floaties
Obviously, you should never let kids swim without adult supervision. But you also should make sure they wear floaties or a lifejacket, even if you are watching them. This will help to ensure they don’t drown.
3. Never forget to dry out their ears after swimming
Kids are very susceptible to ear infections and swimmer’s ear. Make sure to tilt their head to get water out of their ears and dry their ears as well as you can with a towel afterward.
4. Never let kids go in a hot tub
Not only is safety an issue, but kids can pick up germs and diseases from hot tubs. The temperature can also affect them differently. Just be safe and don’t let them get in a hot tub.
5. Never let them drink in too much water
Of course, when kids play at the pool, it is inevitable that they may swallow some water. But, make sure they don’t drink too much, especially chlorine water. This can be very dangerous or make them very ill.
