Tommy Lee Jones stepped back into the spotlight this week with a rare red carpet appearance at the Season 2 premiere of The Lowdown. The 80-year-old actor attended the event in Austin, Texas, and appeared in good spirits as he smiled for photographers.
The outing gave fans a fresh glimpse of Tommy Lee Jones, who has kept a relatively low public profile in recent years. He dressed casually in a blue button-up shirt, black blazer, and jeans, then posed alongside co-stars Ethan Hawke and Ryan Kiera Armstrong.

Jones plays Lee Raybon Sr. in the FX crime drama, the estranged father of Hawke’s character, Lee Raybon. The series centers on Hawke’s self-described journalist as he investigates political corruption in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Season 2 is set to premiere on Oct. 14.
The appearance also marks one of Jones’ more notable public outings since the 2023 premiere of Finestkind. His most recent released film was The Burial, also from 2023, in which he starred alongside Jamie Foxx. Since then, the veteran actor has largely stayed away from major red carpet events.
The Veteran Actor Has Kept a Lower Profile
Over the years, Tommy Lee Jones has built one of Hollywood’s most recognizable careers. His credits include memorable roles in The Fugitive, Men in Black, No Country for Old Men, and Coal Miner’s Daughter. Although he has continued working, fans have seen far less of him at high-profile public events in recent years.

The premiere also comes during a difficult year for his family. His daughter, Victoria Jones, died in January at age 34 after authorities found her unresponsive at a San Francisco hotel. Against that backdrop, seeing Jones smiling and returning to the red carpet for his latest project made the appearance especially notable for longtime fans. At 80, Jones remains connected to the screen while choosing his public appearances carefully. His return for The Lowdown offered both a look at his latest work and a rare moment in the spotlight for one of Hollywood’s most enduring actors.
