Douglas recalls playing outside his family’s apartment building when he noticed one man pressed against a wall near the entrance and another approaching him from across the street. Realizing something was wrong, he ran toward the basement and later saw the men chasing him.
He hid in the boiler room and waited while the men searched nearby. When he finally made a run for the elevator, Douglas says he barely escaped. As the elevator started moving, one of the men reached the door and pressed his face against the small glass window, leaving the young Douglas terrified as he made his way back upstairs.
The Experience Changed How He Understood Fame
Looking back, Douglas told PEOPLE that he felt “hysterical” and deeply frightened during the incident. He also said the experience forced him to understand, at a very young age, that fame could carry risks far beyond attention and recognition.
