‘Hocus Pocus’ Hid Some Seriously Dark Moments Behind All That Halloween Fun

by Ruth A

Published October 9, 2026

Every Halloween, Hocus Pocus returns as one of those comforting seasonal favorites people can quote almost from memory. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy turned the Sanderson Sisters into campy icons, and the movie’s mix of comedy, music, and witchy chaos helped it become a cult classic.

According to Mental Floss, rewatching Hocus Pocus as an adult reveals something that may have sailed right past younger viewers: this movie is surprisingly grim. Beneath the jokes and costumes sits a story filled with death, child endangerment, curses, zombies, and imagery that feels much darker once you stop viewing it through childhood nostalgia.

The movie wastes very little time establishing its stakes. Early on, the Sanderson Sisters drain the life from young Emily Binx while her brother Thackery watches helplessly. They then punish Thackery by transforming him into an immortal cat, forcing him to live on while everyone he loves eventually dies.

From there, the story keeps piling on disturbing details. The witches face execution by hanging, Billy Butcherson returns from the grave as a zombie, and his decaying body becomes a source of repeated physical comedy. At one point, he loses his head, while another scene has him cut open his sewn-shut mouth only for dust and moths to spill out.

The Comedy Hides Some Seriously Creepy Ideas

Some of the movie’s darkest moments hide behind comedy and catchy music. For example, Sarah Sanderson’s “Come Little Children” sounds soothing even as she lures children toward the witches. Meanwhile, the Halloween party traps adults under a dancing spell. Other details are just as disturbing: Winifred’s spellbook is made from human skin, the Black Flame Candle has a gruesome origin, and Dani and other teenagers face imprisonment and death.

The movie also includes adult jokes and suggestive dialogue younger viewers likely missed. That mix of mature humor and macabre material feels very different on rewatch. Even so, the darker elements may help explain why Hocus Pocus still works so well. While the bright costumes and comedy made it fun for kids, the sinister details gave adults more to notice later. What once seemed like a goofy Halloween adventure now feels like a darker fairy tale hiding inside a Disney comedy.
